Nowadays Plastic is commonly used in all parts of the world. Essential items like water bottle, lunch box, food containers, carry bags, combs, etc. is mostly made of plastic. As Plastic is non – biodegradable it can last for a long period even centuries.
Today let’s learn about Plastic and it’s history
So, What is Plastic?
According to Wikipedia– Plastics are a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that use polymers as a main ingredient. Their plasticity makes it possible for plastics to be moulded, extruded or pressed into solid objects of various shapes. This adaptability, plus a wide range of other properties, such as being lightweight, durable, flexible, and inexpensive to produce, has led to its widespread use. Plastics typically are made through human industrial systems.

Most modern plastics are derived from fossil fuel-based chemicals like natural gas or petroleum; however, recent industrial methods use variants made from renewable materials, such as corn or cotton derivatives.
History about Plastic:
- In 1600 BC, Mesoamericans used natural rubber for balls, bands, and figurines.
- Middle Ages, Europeans used treated cow horns as translucent material for windows
Cow Horns
- In 1839 AC, Eduard Simon, a German apothecary, discovers polystyrene
- In 1869 AC, John Wesley Hyatt discovers a method to simplify the production of celluloid, making industrial production possible.
John Wesley Hyatt - PVC was accidentally synthesized in 1872 by German chemist Eugen Baumann.
Eugen Baumann - In 1898 Polyethylene was first synthesized by the German chemist Hans von Pechmann while investigating diazomethane.
- In 1907 Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic.
- Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, was invented in 1920. Sturdy and chemically proof against acids and salts, it in the end became one of the masses widely-produced plastic merchandise in the world.
- In 1925, the term Plastic was introduced which is derived from Greek word “plastikos” which means “capable of being shaped or moulded.”
- Polycarbonate resin thermoplastic was patented to that will be used to make airship windows and many years later, CDs, DVDs and iPods.
Polycarbonate resin - In 1949, High impact polystyrene (HIPS) was introduced as a commercial plastic.
HIPS - Polyethylene terephthalate beverage bottles introduced in 1973.
- In 1976, Plastics in its great variety of forms becomes the most used type of material in the world
